BSNL launches 3G Service

Posted by – March 8, 2010

I took the BSNL EVDO some 6 months back in Bangalore from the BSNL office at National Games Village, Koramangala as there was some offer going on at that time. The device which normally cost Rs.3500 was being offered for just Rs.2000 with a monthly rental of Rs.750 for the unlimited full speed of 2.4Mbps.

I took the EVDO card because many people on the internet have suggested the same and some of these people were getting up to 2Mbps speed. I thought that was hell of a speed for just Rs.750. But then, when I started using the card in JP Nagar, I started receiving half the network and a maximum speed of some 2-5kb/sec download and browsing speed. That was approx 40kbps!

Later I realized that BSNL EVDO card internet speed is completely dependent on the network coverage and quality. I do believe that some people have got the real speed, but in my case the speed was just awful.

So, bottom line, test the speed in your area before actually buying the BSNL EVDO card. The maximum internet speed attainable in your area is fully dependent on the network coverage and network quality. And not all city area are not covered fully with BSNL EVDO network, at least not yet. So, test it before buying and don’t cry later.

And yeah, the BSNL EVDO tariff plans keep changing. I suggest your contact the BSNL helpline directly for the latest tariff plans.

MTNL wants govt to pay its pension liability

Posted by – January 5, 2010

Concerned over falling revenues and profitability, state-run telecom company MTNL has asked the government to pay pension to the company’s retired employees in a bid to cut down wage costs.“We have written to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) saying that pension to our employees should be paid by the government, as in the case of BSNL. Both MTNL and BSNL are government-owned. If government is paying for BSNL, why not for MTNL?” Chairman and Managing Director R S P Sinha said.

The PSU has undertaken three rounds of VRS to cut excessive workforce but is unable to get any benefit out of the trimmed workforce, as the pension is being paid by MTNL itself. In addition to this, the Sixth Pay Commission has put extra burden on the wage and salary bill. MTNL, which is consistently seeing its bottom line and top line under pressure due to severe competition from bigger rivals on the mobile front, feels high wage and salary costs can be checked if government approves its demand for parity with BSNL on the pension liability front.

Sinha said the company’s wage bill rose by Rs 600 crore to around Rs 2,200 crore in FY09, primarily due to the pensions paid out on a turnover of Rs 5,000 crore. In FY09, 48 per cent of MTNL revenues were used to pay wages and salaries. In Q2 ended September 2009, MTNL net profit went down to Rs 20.5 crore against Rs 91.4 crore in the same quarter last financial year. Net income from operations slipped to Rs 955 crore from Rs 1,201 crore.

Essar’s MobileStore buys X-Cite

Posted by – December 13, 2009

The MobileStore, the Esaar group’s mobile phone retail chain, has announced the acquisition of the operations of Impact Retail Pvt Ltd for an undisclosed amount.

The move is expected to help the company enter the Rs 80,000-crore consumer durable and infotech retail market. Impact Retail, a franchisee of the Al Ghanim group from Kuwait, ran its business under the brand X-Cite.

The MobileStore will take over all the seven stores of X-Cite in cities such as Delhi, Gurgaon, Bangalore and Hyderabad. “If we were to build the consumer durable and infotech retail market business on our own, it would have taken us at least two years to reach where X-Cite is today. We are coming out of recession; real estate prices and employee costs have softened. Hence, we thought it was the right time to acquire a company,” said Rajiv Agarwal, CEO and director of The MobileStore.

The company will leverage its own network of 1,300 stores, said a company statement. It is also setting up stores in cities such as Mumbai, Kolkota and Chennai, where X-cite is not present. All the new and old stores will be branded as The MobileStore.

The MobileStore expected 15-20 per cent of its overall revenues to come from the consumer durable and infotech retail market business in three years, a company executive said. Revenue for the current year is projected at about Rs 1,500 crore. This would include sales from the consumer durable and infotech retail market business.

The MobileStore would differentiate itself from other retailers in the segment by providing a superior in-store customer service, offering differentiated service products, better consumer offers and leveraging existing customer base, a release from the company said. It plans to have 2,500 stores by March 2012. The fragmented consumer durable market is dominated by small stores across the country, though large retailers such as Tata’s Croma, Reliance Industries’ Reliance Digital, Future Group’s eZone and Electronic Bazaar, among others, have entered the market over the past four years.

HCL BPO eyes UK, US buys in media , entertainment

Posted by – December 7, 2009

The company is evaluating targets in the $100 million (Rs 465 crore) range. “Acquisitions in the MPE vertical in the BPO space are likely. We are looking at some companies but talks are in the initial stages. More than the valuations, domain capability is important for us,” said Prahlad Punia, head, media and publishing, HCL BPO.The company plans to close the deals in the next five to six months.

The acquisitions are likely to happen in the US or the UK, because the company feels these are mature markets and will offer a larger footprint compared with other geographies. “Australia-New Zealand will offer a small footprint. But there is no target being evaluated in India,” said Punia.

MPE contributes 6.8 per cent to HCL’s total revenues and grew by 52.8 per cent compared with last year. BPO’s share in HCL’s total revenues stood at 9.3 per cent as of September end.

Media and entertainment is a ‘big’ vertical for HCL and Vineet Nayar, HCL Technologies’ CEO, had earlier told Business Standard: “We feel this is the appropriate time for acquisitions to fill in the gaps, as in continental Europe, the enterprise application space, BPO and the engineering side. We are actively looking at opportunities. However, acquisitions are only for filling in the gaps.”

Organically, HCL BPO plans to double the headcount in the MPE segment from the current 300. Starting January, it will add around 300 people, preferably laterals (experienced hands). On the customer side, HCL BPO is talking to five-six clients and expects to close at least two deals in MPE, in the next quarter. Both clients are based in the US.

However, the company is not seeing traction in this vertical from India. The cost advantage here is lesser and margins are under pressure. “We expect the publishing market to grow in the next 12-15 months. However, the Indian market has not opened like the international market, though foreign publications entering might speeden the process,” said Punia.

IT Act makes life difficult for cyber-terrorists

Posted by – November 26, 2009

Cyberlaw expert Pavan Duggal who is also Advocate, Supreme Court, says he has “seen a lot of progressive, proactive action by the government after 26/11”. He adds that the IT Act has given the “widest possible known legal definition”. It has made acts of cyber-terrorism punishable with life imprisonment and a fine (not specified). “Every computer system, network, resource and communication device is now covered by the Act. This will surely act as a deterrent to cyber-terrorism,” says Duggal.

“Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are now accountable for Wi-Fi connections along with the customers,” concurs Naresh Ajwani, Managing Director of S V Teletech and President of the Cyber Café Association of India (CCAOI). He adds that this is “the first and the right step”. With cybercafes also being made accountable, terrrorist emails, too, can be traced — the Headley incident being a case in point. While the FBI helped in identifying the voice over internet protocol (VoIP) gateway (which is not in India and hence makes tracking virtually impossible for the government), the local police traced the email to a computer in the Paharganj area with the help of cybercafe owners.

Duggal, however, highlights a few concern areas. “Not a single case of cyber-terrorism has been reported till date. There has, of course, been no conviction too. Cyber-terrorism can’t be fought by one single provision. We need secondary legislation too.”
